Book Binding & Mending
All my favorite works are here!
Summary
Design is a job, but books are my first and only passion. I am a talented aspiring writer, a book blogger, and a library worker. My house is running low on space for books even though every room has a bookshelf.
Bookbinding was a skill I first learned through an elective at RIT. It was beautiful, therapeutic, and something I wished I could do forever. I no longer have access to many of their specialized tools, but I still mend books with those skills I learned, and enable people to enjoy their books anew even after they've been well loved.
Hand Bound Books
Who knew there were so many book binding techniques? I learned how to execute a number of artistic and functional stitched bindings, as well as board and glued bindings.
A complete list of techniques under my belt are as follows, however they are not all listed above.
- Pamphlet & Double Pamphlet
- Cloth Spine Pamphlet
- Accordion
- Japanese Stab Binding
- Coptic Stitch
- Long Stitch
- Flat Back Binding (or Case Binding)
- Drum Leaf
- Album Binding
Interactive Book Project
Summary
This isn't so much a book binding project, as it is an exercise in literature design, typography, and multimedia content, however, it was printed into a tangible book that real children would be able to enjoy.
This project was a group effort to create and print a children's ABC book. We then had to translate those pages into a digital interactive storybook.
My group chose to create our book on the topic of Empowerment. Since this can be a complicated topic for kids to understand, I wanted my pages to be lighthearted and uplifting, and I wanted my interactions to be simple and encourage exploration and discovery.
For this project I had pages J for Journey, P for Planet, and Z for Zzz (sleep).
Every page was intended to display a different visual style, using a different tool.
